ABDOMINAL PAIN

Any abdominal pain that persists and increases in intensity should be checked by a doctor because it could be appendicitis or another condition that needs to be properly diagnosed.

Abdominal Pain — Lower Area

Apply the following oil over the painful area in a clockwise direction.

  • Thyme linalol 2 drops
  • Eucalyptus radiata 3 drops
  • Cardamom 3 drops

Blend together and then dilute by adding 3–5 drops to each teaspoon (5 mL) of carrier oil.

Abdominal Pain — Upper Area

Apply the following oil over the painful area in a clockwise direction.

  • Peppermint 1 drop
  • Cardamom 3 drops
  • Chamomile roman 2 drops

Blend the essential oils together and then dilute by adding 3–5 drops to each teaspoon (5 mL) of carrier oil.

ABRASIONS

Clean the area well with 5 drops of lavender oil diluted in a bowl of warm water. Apply 1 undiluted drop of lavender around (not on) the abrasion. Or clean the area using 5 drops of thyme linalol diluted in a bowl of warm water. Apply 1 drop of chamomile roman around the abrasion and leave to heal.

ABSCESSES

Make a cold compress using one of the following blends and apply it to the area of swelling twice a day.

  • Lavender 2 drops
  • Tea tree 2 drops
  • Chamomile roman 3 drops

Alternate Blend:

  • Thyme linalol 2 drops
  • Eucalyptus radiata 2 drops
  • Lavender 3 drops

ANAL FISSURES

Bathe the area with warm water to which you have added 5 drops of lavender and 2 drops of lemon oil. Also gently apply around the anal area with the following oil.

  • Chamomile roman 2 drops
  • Geranium 1 drop
  • Lavender 3 drops

Blend together and then dilute by adding 3–5 drops to each teaspoon (5 mL) of carrier oil.

ATHLETE’S FOOT

Make up a mixture of 2 drops of tea tree and 1 drop of lavender, dip a cotton ball into the undiluted essential oil and wipe it between the toes and around the nails. Also make up one of the following blends and rub it over the feet, paying special attention to the toes. The essential oils could also be diluted in cider vinegar.

  • Tea tree 5 drops
  • Lemon 1 drop

Blend together and then dilute by adding 4–5 drops to each teaspoon (5 mL) of carrier oil.

BILIOUS ATTACKS

Inhale from a tissue on which you’ve placed 1 drop of peppermint and 1 drop of lemon oil. And also add 2 drops of peppermint or 2 drops of cardamom to 1 teaspoon (5 mL) of carrier oil and apply over the stomach and gall bladder area (around the right, lower rib cage). Alternatively, inhale from a tissue onto which you’ve put 1 drop of ginger oil.

BLACK EYES

Dilute 1 drop of geranium and 1 drop of chamomile roman in 2 teaspoons (10 mL) of witch hazel and blend well together. Now add this to 1 tablespoon (15 mL) of ice-cold water, mix well, and strain through a paper coffee filter or clean muslin cloth. Then soak some cotton-wool pads in the mixture, and keep them in the fridge. As needed, gently squeeze out the excess liquid, close your eye, and apply a pad to the eyelid and surrounding area. You could blend witch hazel with a chamomile roman or geranium hydrolat and use in the same way.

BLEEDING

Clean and soothe areas of minor bleeding by using a cold compress. Add one of the following blends to a bowl of cold water, and swish the water around to help disperse the essential oil before soaking the compress. Apply the compress over the area before applying a dressing.

  • Geranium 1 drop
  • Lemon 1 drop
  • Chamomile roman 1 drop

BLEEDING NOSE

Pinch the nostrils, then inhale the following essential oils from a tissue:

  • Lemon 3 drops
  • Lavender 1 drop

BLISTERS

Apply 1 drop of undiluted lavender and 1 drop of undiluted chamomile roman to the blister. Apply gently and thoroughly but carefully, so as not to break the surface of the blister.

BOILS

Bathe the area with 2 drops of lavender and 2 drops of thyme linalol diluted in a small bowl of hot water. If the inflammation is severe, add 1 drop of chamomile roman. Then put 1 drop of either undiluted lavender or undiluted chamomile roman directly onto the boil. If the boil has burst and is open, apply 1 drop each of lavender and thyme linalol around the boil. Alternatively, use 1 drop of thyme linalol combined with 1 drop of lemon and apply as above. Hot compresses can be applied to draw out the pus from a boil. Put 1 drop of thyme linalol and 1 drop of lavender onto a hot compress and apply twice a day. After the pus has been dispelled, apply a little of the following oil around the affected area, twice a day:

  • Lavender 3 drops
  • Thyme linalol 2 drops
  • Tea tree 2 drops

Blend together and then dilute by adding 4–5 drops to 1 teaspoon (5 mL) of aloe vera gel.

BRUISES

Make up 2 bowls of water, 1 hot and 1 cold, and add the following to both:

  • Lavender 2 drops
  • Rosemary 3 drops
  • Geranium 1 drop

Soak a washcloth in each bowl and apply them alternately to the bruise and the surrounding area. Then apply a small amount of the following oil:

  • Geranium 2 drops
  • Rosemary 2 drops
  • Lavender 1 drop

Blend together and then dilute by adding 4–5 drops to each teaspoon (5 mL) of carrier oil or aloe vera gel.

BURNS

For minor burns apply ice-cold water for at least 10 minutes. Then put 2 drops of undiluted lavender oil directly onto the affected area. Put 5 drops of lavender onto a dry, cool compress and cover the area. Repeat as needed.

Cigarette Burns

Cool by running the area under a cold-water tap, dry, and then apply 1 drop of undiluted lavender to the burn.

Blisters from Burns and Scalds

Do not pierce the blister. Put 1 drop of undiluted lavender oil onto the blister and then hold an ice-cold compress over the area for at least 10 minutes. Cover with a piece of dry, clean gauze. Repeat up to three times a day.

CATARRH (sinus congestion)

Firstly use the bowl method of steam inhalation: blend the following essential oils together and use 3–4 drops in a bowl of hot water and inhale the steam for at least 10 minutes. Keep your eyes tightly closed:

  • Rosemary 2 drops
  • Peppermint 1 drop
  • Tea tree 1 drop
  • Eucalyptus radiata 1 drop
  • Cardamom 2 drops

When it’s convenient also rub your chest and back with the following oil:

  • Tea tree 2 drops
  • Rosemary 2 drops
  • Eucalyptus radiata 5 drops
  • Thyme linalol 1 drop

Blend together and dilute by adding 3–5 drops to each teaspoon (5 mL) of carrier oil or aloe vera gel. Also, put 2 drops of any of the catarrh essential oil blends, undiluted, on a paper tissue and inhale when needed. A chest rub can also be made by mixing together the essential oils in this alternative blend. Dilute the blend by adding 3–5 drops to each teaspoon (5 mL) of carrier oil or aloe vera gel.

CHAPPED LIPS

Apply to the lips:

  • Chamomile roman 2 drops
  • Geranium 2 drops

Mix well with 2 teaspoons (10 mL) of aloe vera gel or basic balm. Use a small amount for each application.

CHAPPED SKIN

Make up the following oil and gently massage over the chapped area, including the face if affected:

  • Geranium 2 drops
  • Chamomile roman 2 drops
  • Lemon 1 drop Lavender 1 drop

Blend together and then dilute by adding 3–4 drops to each teaspoon (5 mL) of carrier oil. Use a small amount each time.

CHILBLAINS

Apply 1 drop of undiluted geranium oil to the affected area, usually the toes or fingers. Do this for two days, then apply a little of the following oil:

  • Geranium 5 drops
  • Lavender 1 drop
  • Rosemary 1 drop

Blend together and then dilute by adding 3–5 drops to each teaspoon (5 mL) of carrier oil or aloe vera gel.

COLD SORES / FEVER BLISTERS (herpes simplex virus)

If you have a cold sore around your mouth or feel that one might be coming, put 1 drop of geranium oil on a cotton swab and apply it directly onto the sore. Repeat several times a day. Also, apply the following body oil over the whole torso, including the neck:

  • Geranium 10 drops
  • Lavender 10 drops
  • Thyme linalol 2 drops
  • Lemon 8 drops

Dilute the above essential oils in 2 tablespoons (30 mL) of carrier oil, and use about 2 teaspoons (10 mL) of the blend per application.

COMMON COLD

Blend the following essential oils together and use 3–4 drops in a hot bath, first diluted in a little carrier oil. Lie back and deeply inhale the aroma:

BATH Blend

  • Thyme linalol 2 drops
  • Tea tree 2 drops
  • Eucalyptus radiata 1 drop
  • Geranium 3 drops
  • Cardamom 3 drops

For the steam inhalation method, use 1 drop each of the following: thyme linalol, lavender, and geranium. Also, combine 2 drops each of thyme linalol, peppermint, eucalyptus radiata, and 1 drop of cardamom in a bottle and use 1 drop of this blend on a tissue to inhale whenever needed. Another method involves massaging around the chest, neck, and sinus area (forehead, nose, and cheekbones — keeping the eyes tightly closed) with the following:

  • Lemon 1 drop
  • Eucalyptus radiata 2 drops
  • Rosemary 2 drops

Dilute the blend in 2 teaspoons (10 mL) of carrier oil or aloe vera gel and use a tiny amount for each application.

CONJUNCTIVITIS (pink eye)

Add 1 drop of chamomile roman to 1 teaspoon (5 mL) witch hazel and mix as well as possible. Then add to 2 tablespoons (30 mL) of rose water and leave for at least seven hours. Strain through a paper coffee filter and use with a cold compress on the eyelids (keeping eyes tightly closed).

CONSTIPATION

Constipation can have underlying causes — check dietary habits and fluid intake. In some cases, massage can help. Always massage in a clockwise direction over the lower abdomen. Make up the following oil and use a small amount three times a day:

  • Rosemary 15 drops
  • Lemon 10 drops
  • Peppermint 5 drops

Blend together and then dilute by adding 3–5 drops to each teaspoon (5 mL) of carrier oil or aloe vera gel.

CONVALESCENCE

If you have a convalescent at home it may well be worth investing in essential oils that are not included in the Basic Care Kit. The following oils, which are in the kit, are all helpful and can be used in body oils, in the bath, or in a room diffuser and other room methods: geranium, lemon, lavender, rosemary, chamomile roman. Any blends used during convalescence should be ones that the patient really likes and enjoys. Lavender has universal appeal, as does geranium. Add in lemon and you have a gentle blend to start off the process of recovery. Always start with the lowest suggested amount of dilution. If a blend says to use between 3 and 5 drops, use 3.

COUGHS

Dry Coughs

  • Eucalyptus radiata 3 drops
  • Thyme linalol 2 drops

Blend together and then dilute by adding 4–5 drops to each teaspoon (5 mL) of carrier oil. Apply a small amount over the back and chest at least twice a day. For the steam inhalation method, use 3 drops of lavender and 3 drops of eucalyptus radiata.

Coughs with Mucus

Follow the steam inhalation treatment outlined above, in dry coughs.

  • Eucalyptus radiata 2 drops
  • Thyme linalol 2 drops
  • Tea tree 1 drop
  • Geranium 1 drop

Blend together and then dilute by adding 6 drops to each teaspoon (5 mL) of carrier oil. Massage a small amount over the back and chest at least twice a day.

CUTS AND WOUNDS

Bathe the affected area using 3½ fl. oz. (100 mL) of warm water to which the following essential oils have been added, ensuring the water is agitated to avoid globules:

  • Lavender 5 drops
  • Tea tree 2 drops

Alternative Blend:

  • 2 Chamomile roman 5 drops
  • Lavender 5 drops

Also, place 3 drops of lavender on a piece of gauze and place it over the area. Renew it twice a day and expose the injury to air on the third day if possible.
